But oh the horror. Almost all of Singapore's Malay-Muslim community will be there. Like a friend said and I quote, "If I were to kill everyone here, half of the Malay community will be wiped out."
True to that sense, it's a place where all the Mats and Minahs a.k.a the Ah Lians and Ah Bengs of the Malay community congregate. They're everywhere! Whether its pushing a pram (shotgun marriage) or sporting tattoos all over their arms. I've got zero comments on the former but the latter is becoming more and more of a disrespect to the culture. Some even as far as perching on the railings like a pack of mynahs. That's not a compliment.
I don't think sporting a tattoo is cool and neither does the religion encourage it. You could easily tell whether the tattoo has been there for quite a while or its been just freshly inked. Even some youngsters are having them inked. What does it say, really? That they are not taught religion? Or it is just mere disrespect to the culture? Its not a minority I'm pointing out, it's everywhere and as a Pan-Asian mixed in this society, I'm fairly concerned about it. If they want to have the tattoo inked, then bravo. But have the courtesy to cover them up when you're walking in that area, at this time, during the Holy Month of Ramadhan.
I've got no issues with Mats and Minahs, same goes to the Ah Bengs and Ah Lians of the non-Muslim community. Its their behaviour and lack of social grace that's pointing the thumbs down in the social status.
Is this the kind of society that I will have to deal with in the future?
Why is it that the most significant population in prison or DRCs are Malay? Is it because we are like this? I seem to be doubtful. Even though, the professional bodies are reassuring us, yes, we are moving ahead. So and so has received this award, we are proud of him/her, as a result we are moving ahead. What gives?
If having another race gives my children more benefits than this, I would gladly and without a doubt, change it. It would be Japanese.
Ideally, I would have my children study abroad. What's the point of having a world-class education system when my very own society refuses to progress forward?
Honestly, by birth, I'm not Malay. I'm just mixed up between a Boyanese and Thai. Either way, my parents would still have me as a Malay because well, they speak Malay. After having meeting the higher echelons of society, I now realise how low we are.
"Are you a Chinese?"
"No, I'm not."
"Thai? Japanese?"
"No, I'm a Malay."
"Ohh, a Malay." followed by a -_- face.
That told me a thousand words. Thanks.
Being a Muslim doesn't make you a Malay.
Being a Malay doesn't make you a Muslim.
Are we destined to a fate as such? I refuse to believe this. Not as long as I can do something about it. You can count on it.
